Barcelona star Lionel Messi will lend his name to a chain of cafes in Spain.

The first Cafe Messi is set to open in Barcelona later this year, with 17 more franchises to follow throughout the rest of Spain. The cafes will be filled with shirts, trophies and other memorabilia from the Argentine's glittering career with the Catalan club and his national team.

"It is an investment that we will undertake jointly with Messi to create a cafe," an unnamed director from the investment company Hope Funds told website Apertura.com. "The concept will be similar to that of Hard Rock Cafe."

According to Forbes' financial ratings, Messi earns in excess of €30 million per year through club wages and endorsements, placing him 11th on their list of the world's highest-paid athletes.

The Argentine is set to claim 50 per cent of the profits just for his lending his name to the initiative.
